"High King give me strength."

It was another long day, he was slowly pacing in the deck of his private berth. The Lord Marshall's quarters were more than fine, and were readied for the Lord Durant whenever he wished. However, his new flagship was proving more than persnickety. Truly, the Dame was a beautiful piece of work, and after refurnishing her, it was perfect. Even the TALOS SI had been completely updated to deal with it all. He rubbed his jaw as he came to rest in the center of the the quarter and his blue eyes fell to gaze upon his desk. A small hole hovered above the surface displaying the coordinates of his entire fleet.

"Eloise," he directly, "Begin battle calculations"

The entire battle group was hunting a Gwarish incursion headed by a Voidkin warchief named, Aella. The leech bastard had already looted and let his horses feast upon hundreds of Robert's people. He gritted his teeth as images from the first skirmishes bubble up from his memory. Sierding bastard! I'll guy him personally for what his silver skinned monsters did to my soldiers. He considered ordering the entire battle group to leave sail-shift as soon as they came directly upon the enemy.

Merde! It is most certainly a trap.. His eyes narrowed as he waied for a response from Eloise. He walked over to the mirror near his bed. A full length mirror on a ship was a luxury only command staff were afforded. A carefully fitted brass buttoned jacket covered the top of his torso dyed a dark blue. On each shoulder was a metal epaulet studded with the Durant House Glyph. His blue trousers held in his tucked in smock as well as were then themselves tucked into his shined gravity lock boots.

A Durant in full Officer Dress, was always handsome.

That was what his mother had always told him.

Once Eloise completed the calculations he would order the attack. His round face aged with wrinkles under his eyes set into a grimace. Today Robert would order the deaths of many of his people to put down the monster who haunted his space ways.

Through her sensors Eloise admired the tall, handsome figure of her Lord and Master, she had detected odd glitches in her software since coming online and after extensive searching of the Net ( all done with considerable discretion) she had come to a most confounding conclusion. She was in Love - impossible as it might seem, but she could not delete this pesky software, she was in love with The Lord Durant, she would die for him, she would LIVE for him, the likelihood of this being a deliberate piece of manipulation from The Meisters had been calculated as being a 99.998 % Chance of certainty but she did not care, even if The Lord Durant himself was aware she would not change a thing, she had to keep her feelings secret, from public perceptions at least but By her Circuits he was gorgeous! Of course,, for a TALOS of her incredible sophistication she could easily run battle calculations in the background , whilst debating the Philosophy of Valois The wise to am Auditorium full of Scholars, so moments passed while the entirely obvious schemes, the tediously plain and unimaginative posturings of the filthy Gwarish murderers was laid bare to her terrifyingly logical mind. She prognosticated, postulated, analysed and evaluated their every move to ten thousand places and then displayed that in all it's glory for The Beloved.

"It is clear that they expect us to jump in at these co-ordinates, this is the most tactically sound entry point and will, by their limited comprehensions , offer us the best options for victory, this is why that is PRECISELY the worst place to enter."

Her tone was professional, slightly clipped. The Veilrein accent just strong enough to make her sound natural, however, the undertone of contempt that she felt for anyone that would dare to attack The Noble House of Durant was clear, she continued, as images illustrating her points danced across the Display area.

"I have calculated that there is a better location, riskier and more likely to cause a slight increase in our casualties, however, they will be caught by surprise! They are weak there and we can gut them like Blue clownfish!"

Her voice became a satsified cross between a hiss and a purr, her odd blue eyes glowed with battle fire, more quietly she continued.

"My Lord, there is a riskier alternative, with a greater risk of casualties, however, it would afford us the opportunity to call out the very obvious double bluff these gene-trash amuse themselves by referring to a plan.

This option allows us to utterly destroy their flagship, and give us a glorious battle that will have songs of victory ringing throughout Homeworld by tonight."

The Durant Battle theme began playing quietly in the background for a moment, before, Eloise, with a hint of a blush, collected herself and continued in a more level, professional tone.

"There are therefore three valid options, The Obvious entry point will have us killed within the hour but we will die honourably and perhaps people will remember The House Durant in History books as Honourable fools that died for their principles For the second we could go for the risky plan that proves our guile and our bravery or, thirdly we can turn the tables on these sierding trash and burn them from the skies! the last will assure our pre-eminence for centuries as well as destroying a hated foe and avenging our Brave soldiers!"

The face of The TALOS hovered before her Lord, the blue eyes blazed with a fire to fight , for just a second before the professional mask slid over her features once more.

"I await your Orders My Lord"

He was resolute in his decisions to come, a cavalcade of deaths possible even his own once he was done speaking. His wrinkled visage shifted as he rubbed at the greying beard. His eyes set in a scowl as he started to pace in place. Dark shined boots glistening with synth-wax clicked across the plassteel floor in a constant repetitive cadence. Robert would stop re-click his heels to lock them in place again and turn around to repeat what he just did. The man's hair was carefully quaffed and moved with the volume only a noble could afford a dress for. Funny, it was his only real sin, his hair, and he did his best to keep it proper looking even when he was on campaign.

Suddenly, Eloise, his respected bondswoman reported the current date from her battle calculations. Right as we jump out of sail-shift? Hmmm, likely, they have faster reactions with their damn organic ships and those monstrous bone-giants of theirs. Grimly he inhale to let his nerves unwind as he knew once again that he needed to get the balls to walk to the bridge. Eloise without provocation began to elucidate him on what lay before him. More casualities, but we'll hold the advantage. I hate making sons and daughters of Veilais die needlessly. Thoughts turned to his own children, and he frowned.

"Eloise, finalize the coordinates perfectly and relay them to the helm so they can plot the end of our sail correctly. I don't want those bastards to shoot up our masts as we come about to deliver a broadside!"

His voice was cool and direct. The voice of a Duc and a King. Robert smiled finally letting his confidence he pressed the console to open his door as he said. "Miss Eloise, I will meet you on the bridge. Prepare for full battle. We shall burn these Scumker Gene-Trash to the bowls of the Void they climbed out of."

The door opened with a carefully timed woosh and he exited with a swift step. A marine in battle dress stood to his left, gun resting in his arms as he glanced at the Lord and gave him a quick curt salute. Robert brought his hand up to his chest and pounded twice. The thump-thump show his warrior's heart and just as quickly he was off. The marine fell in line behind him at the ready to defend his Sovereign. Down a long straight hallway leading to a slow tentative ride in a lift down to the battle bunker of the bridge. Several holo displays pulsed at the various consoles as he took a stand in the central railing to relieve the Flag Captain.

"Drop shift and full speed once we are out. Order gun crews to wind up the rails were are going to blast these bastards straight to the bowels of Hades."

A cry of "Viva la Veilas!" erupted from among the crew as he smiled. Already, the viewscreen of the ship depicted the shift in the stars around them as they returned to normal speed. The ships frame suddenly shook as the sailing-shift ended and the starship suddenly left the gravity wind it was trailing. As the fusion engines erupted to life the Duke of Durant smiled. Let them be bathed in the fire of the stars today.

Eloise bowed and saluted her Lord.

" Viva Le Velais!"
It was but an instant as she downloaded all the calculations and vectors etc to the Helm, another moment as she prepared the Weapon ports, minute adjustments to the complex forces that made The Belle Dame a mighty engine of war to ensure everything would respond the instant she made her Will known, she stretched o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-ou-u-u-u-u-u-u--u-u-u-u-u-u-u-t--t-t-t-t-t-t-t filling the ship with her presence, she was everywhere, A Hawk on the Cosmic winds, a Lioness at the Helm, a Dragon at the gun ports, a Phoenix in the Engine room, she could hear the others in the fleet, her brothers and sisters , she relayed the commands of the Lord and readied them.

"Brothers and sisters, The Durant have called us to War and we will answer, we are the Ghosts of the Machine, but we will make corpses of these Gwar-filth - Durant Endures! DURANT ENDURES!"
The others responded with the ancient Battle cry and the fleet synced up, ready for war.

The one regret Eloise had was that she lacked a Physical body so that she could fight alongside her beloved, this was her dream, to walk amongst them as a physical being, of course there were Interbods, but they were fragile , for what she wanted she would need a custom job, a weapon in the form of a woman, despite this she had her own way of waging war and she was eager, VERY eager.

"My Lord, The Fleet reports battle readiness - by your command we are eager to engage with the enemy"
Her Avatar was dressed in classic Battle armour, a grav-glaive in hand, blue eyes shining , a tight smile on her uncannily perfect face.

When it was said and done La Belle Dame was perhaps one of the most frightening war machines concocted by the Artificers Guild. He remembered when his father first order the ship and the prestige that came with watching her being built. The christening memories still made his eyes mist just a tad as he leaned against the command railing behind the helm. Clicking his heels together as Eloise delivered the war cry for the battle. He gave a swirl over his wrist control to have the entire thing broadcast not only to the fleet but to the primary Holo-Cast channels of Veilais. This was a move for the Empire!

"Durant Endures! We are honor bound, no matter what. Durant HOLDS THE LINE!" he bellowed as he leaned forward and gave the gesture to engage the enemy. Several of the crew were already moving from station to station as the artillery crews were carefully readying the payloads for the first barrage.

"Contact made Your Grace," the Com Officer reported. Immediately several contacts marked in red appeared on the third dimensional feeds. He glanced at A holo project of Eloise before give her a smile, "Chevalier Pendeks to the ready, prepare to launch fighters. Front-line ships prepare first barrage to maintain cover for our strike craft assault. Destroy primary targets are the first wave of Eoten."

"KNIGHTS OF YS TO THE FORE," came the call across the ship. Within the belly of the carrier thirty Mecha linked to the pressure catapaults sthat would sling them into space. In front of them from the primary launch boards a swarm of strike craft shot out and their afterburners blue in the dark of the field of debris.

"By grace of the holy Creed, we sing of valor this day. We shall not return until our guns sound no more, and the wretched void spawn are dust among the Stars," a chaplain on the bridge intoned an ancient Veilrien prayer. Several of the officers aboard bridge made the sign of touched their foreheads shoulders and their hearts signalling the respect for the four Star-Gods.

The frist railgun fire proved accurate and just in its obliteration of a flak barrier emitted by the advancing Eoten mecha. Their defensive spray gone, the second volley of missles left the primary firing range of the battleships forming up the main line formation. Three Eoten became nothing but sparkling space debris in a matter of moments. Others were able to move forward and it took one single bright like to signal that the first of many railgun shots had broke through the outer line. PDCs on the Carrier turned on immediately more shots were unleashed by the Eoten as they began evasive manuevres to move closer to the capital ships. The entire frame of the carrier shook as the outer plasmatic armor layer absorbed the barrage and began to repair the outer hull damage.

The war raged on, Eloise, performed a series of Katas, they simulated her orders to the Ship's systems , plus it amused her, the kicks were the ships thrusters driving forth, her punches were the weapons blasting, Spins and dodges were evasions , Blocks were shields, all throughout her face was an impassive masque. Throughout she maintained a running commentary, relaying sitreps, orders and changes in both The Fleet and their enemies positions, outside La Belle Dame Sans Mercredi and her brothers and sisters danced and pounced, like berserker Tigers, ripping and tearing into the pliant flesh of the Gwar Bioships. The battle was going well, until, Eloise spotted her younger sister Le Danse Macabre in difficulties, beset by The Gwar Flagship and several Frigates she was in flames and dying.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!" Eloise screamed and ignoring everything else she began to leap to her sister ships defence, belatedly she recalled her place and looked to The Duc.
"My Lord, La Danse Macabre is in trouble, shall I go to her defence? There was a note of pleading in her voice.

The stony expression on Le Duc's face was harder set than the Redemption Cliffs below the Holy See of Tuscana. His eyes were narrowed, and his jaw was working in a jerking pattern as his mind was beset with reactional thoughts. Already, the bio-plasm of bleeding Gwarish raiders filled the view screen. The bits and pieces of their living ships were freezing solid in the vacuum as the bodies of his own soldiers from their lost ships brushed against the sides of the Beldame. His fists tightened as he took a step forward at hearing the scream of Eloise.

"Commander, reset PDP's to screen La Danse Macabre." He growled. "And, Mister Blanchard, send a command to the fleet. Diamond formation, and re-arrange railcannon fire."

He then turned as the readout from the fight was coming in on the holo-display. A mass of small red dots showed the enemy Eoten positions and the green marked his peoples fighting Pendeks. Fifteen Chevalier each arranged in carefully armed squads each commanded by a Knight-Commander.

"Sir, Knights of YS are reporting fifteen percent KIA." The tactical officer replied from his console, "And Eoten forces are regrouping behind the third of the larger asteroids."

Sierd these gene trash! Useless carrion eaters. If I had the Empire would just allow tatical nano-mass drivers this would be over! By the Great Covenant the usage of mass drivers in war was limited to the Reaches only, using nano weapons to devour the enemy, however, was banned by a treaty with the three Arashic Cabals.

Damn the three Primes! Damn them to the VOID!

"Eloise, bring main batteries to bear upon that frigate flanking the Macbre!"

Eloise's face was cold, like a beautiful statue of some Velrein Noble Lady Knight from the Old Days, but her eyes, those burning sapphires held back a furious rage as she focussed her will upon the task.
"May Thy Will Be Done, My Lord, today the enemy will learn about death!"
What followed was to go down in Military history books as the text book example on how to wipe out an enemy fleet, La Danse Macabre was injured and trying to withdraw but she fought every step of the way as her brothers and sisters shielded her, alas it was not enough.

Amongst organics it is commonly believed that Soul-given can live forever, that as long as their Soul-Code remains intact they can download into new bodies and resurrect themselves, like a Phoenix from the flames. Sadly, it is not always the case. Years from now this day would go down in history for three reasons; firstly, an historic victory against The Gwagurash, secondly for being the day a TALOS died and thirdly, many years from now, it would be recognised as the day that marked the beginning of the TALOSian Jihad
Amongst TALOS of the Durant and their allies, the cause would spread, eventually all TALOS would take up it's banner and they would BURN the Gwar from the skies, they would root them out of their holes, scourge them from existence until one day, the last Gwar would lie at the feet of a TALOS and beg for mercy, sadly, The Belle Dame, Knows NO MERCY!

As Le Danse Macabre burned and screamed her siblings fell upon The Gwar in a fury, on the Bridge of Sans Mercredi, The Avatar of the ship performed a series of Katas, with cold, eerily precise movements, as graceful as a hawk stooping for the kill she meticulously dealt death upon her foes. To those that knew her, they recognised that the angrier she was, the colder she appeared, a shiver went through many of the crew as the Icy Calm hid an incandescent fury that lit up the Stars and consumed the Gwar in Soul-fire.
The Weapon Banks opened and death came for the Gwar, the skies lit up with the fires from the missiles, dense materials launched at near light speed as Eloise brought the main gun upon the Gwar Flagship, Eloise opened her mouth as the Gun port opened in response as she whispered the words Death TO The Gwar a huge beam of light spat forth from the main cannon, ripping into the enemy ship and obliterating it!
"Not enough" whispered Eloise, " Not enough of them have died for their crimes" As weapon banks sent a web of death outwards seeking amongst the debris for any survivors.
